In theory, there are good reasons behind this, but financially its just plain stupid.

Analyst firm Gartner is recommending that firms still running Windows 2000 should upgrade to Windows XP before upgrading to Windows Vista, to ease the transition, and because upgrade tools from Win2K to Vista may nto be as robust as those from Win2K > XP and XP > Vista.

Yes, because paying for two operating system upgrades for thousands of PCs is exactly the thing businesses should do. Everyone can afford that!

Does Gartner get a commission?

Users have been installing Windows 2000 to avoid the migration costs and application testing required if Windows XP is deployed said Michael Silver, research vice-president at analyst firm Gartner.

Gartner is recommending that users continue running Windows XP until Vista has been thoroughly tested, which could take as long as 18 months. “Even when PCs are purchased with Vista, downgrade to XP until after testing,” Silver advised.

Oooh! Downgrade from Vista to XP! Does Gartner think that you can get Windows XP for free if you promise to buy Vista later? I don’t understand where the money for all these extra copies of Windows will be coming from.
