Success Hammers Blogging Sites

Six Apart and Bloglines have had performance issues as spikes in usage push the capabilities of their data centers to the limit.

Typepad has been the blogging service of choice for a number of users, but its growth has produced outages, degraded service, and missing blog posts, Netcraft’s Rich Miller posted.

Currently the Typepad status page shows blogs as “degraded” and the service as “down.” Not a good situation for the bloggers who pay for performance. Six Apart has apologized repeatedly for the issues, and is working hard to transition to a more robust data center.

Online RSS feed reader Bloglines has had similar issues, as visitors pour into its site to use the very effective product it provides. Unfortunately, free has brought a high price to Bloglines, as it has to move to a new data center as well.

It’s a price that Bloglines is facing with candor. “We’re not going to beat around the bush about this. Bloglines performance has sucked eggs lately,” they posted. Bloglines can likely afford that price, as it’s part of Ask Jeeves, which is part of IAC/InterActiveCorp (current market cap: $8.8 billion.)
