Japanese police arrested 30-year-old Takahiro Yamamoto, charging violations of patent laws. Yamamoto is accused with posting a false story on the Yahoo Japan news site claiming china had invaded the Japanese island of Okinawa.

The story’s dateline said “America, Oct. 18 Kyodo,” with the headline “Chinese Military Invades Okinawa,” according to the police report. The real Kyodo news agency said the police reported 66,000 hits to the site before it got pulled.

Apparently, Yamamoto built a website looking remarkably like Yahoo Japan’s site and posted the story there. The AP reported both Yahoo and Kyodo had filed complaints with the police.

This is another example of cybercrime in the works. The reason behind the crime remains unclear but the police will continue to analyze the confiscated computer as well as question the Yamamoto.
