Here Comes CNET With the Windup

    April 5, 2005

CNET has acquired Windup Labs and its HeyPix! service, which will enable it to deliver advanced photo management, social networking, and blogging capabilities…

…to the 23 million visitor community of Webshots, the photo-sharing Web site. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Webshots, established in 1995, is one of the fastest-growing photo sharing communities on the Internet. More than 750,000 photos are uploaded daily, and its photo library grew by 66 million photos in the first quarter of 2005 alone, for a total of 175 million publicly and privately shared photos. Webshots’ active community can share images via photo messages, online photo albums, custom prints and gifts, and more. Through free homepages and its Favorite Members network, consumers can connect with friends, family and millions of others worldwide.

HeyPix!, which launched in December 2004, is an innovative new photo sharing service that enables average digital photographers to feel like pros, managing, editing and organizing the photos they store on their computers with ease. HeyPix! offers features such as photo tagging and social networking capabilities, public and private sharing permissions control, and the ability to publish photos to favorite blogs.

“As a group, we believe Webshots members are the Web’s most prolific public photo sharers, uploading and sharing over 750,000 photos per day,” said Martin Green, senior vice president at CNET Networks. “We are excited to welcome the HeyPix! Founders to our team and introduce their innovative photo organization, tagging, blogging and social networking services to our 23 million monthly users. Together, we’re reinforcing Webshots’ lead with some great features that will bring photo sharing to the next level.”
