Nazis Sober Blitzkrieg: Right Wing SPAM Attack

Monday’s inboxes were clogged with a new variant of the German Sober worm; a SPAM attack aimed at those who can sprechen sie language.

Some things just never go away as the nationalistic Nazi party are now, 60 years later, using the Sober.q worm, a variant of the original 2003 version, to load up e-mail with neo-Nazi propaganda.

An improvised version of the Sober strain, “q” is being distributed by a website that automatically updates computers that were infected with “p,” and the virus began spreading May 2nd.

Some of the messages are in English with subject lines like “The Whore Lived Like a German,” and “Dresden Bombing Is To Be Regretted Enormously.”

This is a new agenda for Spammers, who are usually looking to make money. This new worm is about politics.

“We have seen a trend in which worm authors are using spam not to hawk goods, but as a tool for political propaganda,” said Scott Chasin, chief technical officer for the anti-virus firm MX Logic.
