In the recent changes to Google’s AdSense terms of service, many AdSense users noticed this statement: “multiple ad units may be displayed on each Web site page, but no ad unit shall contain any advertisement in common with any other ad unit.”

This caused a stir at WebMasterWorld, where eager posters sought to put multiple ad units on their pages.

Multiple ad units could be especially useful to advertisers with lengthy articles, who are looking to increase their AdSense returns.

One issue, however, is that duplicate ads could result if there are multiple instances of ad units. Google, in their TOS, stated, “no ad unit shall contain any advertisement in common with any other ad unit.”

Google changed their terms of service before changing the service itself, which set off the confusion in the first place. This is due, said AdSense representative Gokul Rajaram in an interview with WebMasterWorld Moderator Jenstar, because Google only wants to update their TOS once every quarter.

This sort of advance notice from Google is quite rare.
