You may have noticed a newer feature on YouTube, right at the top of the homepage, called "Videos being watched right now…." If you were checking out that feature around 11:00 this morning, you would have noticed people were watching porn.

The "Videos being watched right now" feature presents five thumbnails of what people are watching and cycles through several sets. This isn’t content that is searched for specifically, just there on the homepage.

I wasn’t on the homepage myself. I was following a Valleywag link to where NBC’s YouTube channel used to be. Below the "This channel not available" notice, and above the "Promoted Videos" thumbs, I was flashed.

A still shot of fellatio-in-progress. Copious side-boob that brought up a soft-core Skinamax scene. And another round of fellatio, this time (lucky fella) with two girls at the, um, helm. Let’s not leave out an ad for MilfHunters.com, either.

Click for larger view Not that porn is unheard of on the Internet, especially at video-sharing sites, but it was a bit shocking to see it just presented to me like a pop-up ad on YouTube, which purports to have a strict family-friendly content approach. The YouTube community usually takes care of it.

Click for larger view Except for hot girls making out or stripping – so long as not too much skin is showing. The community in charge of flagging content will designate those, like this one, as potentially inappropriate and slap an age-restriction on it. (It works like all other age-restriction buttons on the Internet – an honor system, as if.)

But the community, apparently, isn’t in fast enough to flag inappropriate or obscene content before it reaches the "Videos being watched right now" section.

When asked about this morning’s peep show, a YouTube spokesperson told WebProNews that the community "effectively polices the site for inappropriate material" and that once said material is flagged, it is reviewed by staff and "removed from the system within minutes."

And if they upload it again?

"We also disable the accounts of repeat offenders," said the spokesperson.

The incident is the latest example of YouTube’s struggle with the very concept that made it a cultural phenomenon; the crowd may be diligent, but the crowd is too slow for automated features, too quick to upload offending material, whether erotic or copyrighted, again.

Parent company Google also had a few indecent images "sneak in" to the Google News page. Nude images are also against Google News’s policy.

YouTube recently announced a new content filter to better combat users who upload copyrighted material. But go ahead, search for any musician and see if you can find their music video. Bet it’s easy.

But not as easy as passively watching current videos scroll unfiltered at the top of the homepage.

Is there no way to stop this or light some fire under YouTube’s arce?  I love YouTube but I don’t want to see someones scrotum all up in my grill.  What can we do?

  • flagflagger

No shit. I’m so sick of porn on youtube I could puke.  Honestly, I can’t say that I am apposed to porn in general; it’s that it is so prevelant on youtube all these young kids can see it with a couple of clicks.  And what about all those young girls in bikini videos and crap?  Where’s there parents at?  Why does youtube allow kids to post videos?  It’s dangerous for our kids and I think kids should not be allowed to use youtube.

KIDS DON’T NEED YOU TUBE, KIDS DON’T NEED PORN AND MOSTLY, KIDS DO NOT NEED THE INTERNET. THINK BACK TO THE TIME THERE WAS NO INTERNET. KIDS WERE PROTECTED SOME WHAT. YOU ARE RIGHT ABOUT NOTHING BEING FOR KIDS BECAUSE YOU HAVE A RIGHT, NO MATTER AGE/ GENDER, TO BE SAFE ON THE INTERNET BUT I AM AFRAID YOU MUST BE REALLY CAREFUL ON EVERY SITE YOU DO USE COS THERE ARE BIG BAD THINGS OUT THERE THAT YOU WILL LEARN ABOUT WHEN YOUR A GROWN UP AND WHEN YOU HAVE CHILDREN YOU WILL SEE HOW MUCH BAD STUFF IS OUT THERE

Wow, you talk to him like he’s a little kid? I remember when I was 13 along with my friends.. And he seems pretty polite for most 13 year olds at that age these days saying that he doesn’t think it is right.. Instead he could have said what a 13 year old I know would have said “Your just a old dumb broad who’s dumb as shit.” I’m assuming he’s not 13 anymore but he’s definently probably the kid who’s everybodies parents like.

        • ehhhh

To be honest i think at a certain age give a young man his porn better that then a bunch of bastard children being brought into the world with dudes too young to understand fatherhood

If I was 13, I would certainly enjoy watching any soft porn I can get my hands on. However, at 56, I’ve seen just about everything anybody could think of in the realm of porn. It seems that the average age of the typical YouTube viewer is 13. Or, at least  the comments I read on various videos seem to be coming from 13 year old brains.

I would have to assume that if I were to start up a similar YouTube type of website (let’s say based on motorcycle repair)..I would get comments like

"Oh ya !  my bike is better than your bike. And your mother is a whore. so fuck you and everybody that looks like you"

These type of comments speak volumes about the maturity of the internet generation of today. Not everyone is a foul mouthed commentor, I’m just saying the average age of viewers seems to be: 13

Honestly, there is no such thing as soft porn except a girl in a bikini, if anybody wanted to look at that they could in fact just type in anything sexual on Google™ and get 1000′s of sites of what they want.

you tube as hi5 should allow people to rate porn/inmoral videos as offensive if they are, so that the people responsable for you tube can find them easily, since that many children are also using this web site…

I honestly think lots of “kids” are more mature than some of the “adults” here because honestly if you need to look at porn, its because your curious about what to do that next time your alone with a girl, and no matter what a parent or “adult” does they can’t block everything and that’s why as long as the kid was actually raised decent more than likely they will have enough brains to brush it off and not go to a friend needing to show them. Literally it gets old with everybody fighting about what’s wrong and what’s right.. Everybody is blaming Youtube® and Google® for this, well really.. It’s the pedophiles faults and those who us “kids” need to look out for and be smart enough not to fall into traps like that. And most of all if there is a virus on the computer, I’m sure more than 80% of us younger generation know how to back-up and reformart a hard disk then defragment so it is easy to get rid of them.. But “kids” to these “adults” these days aren’t smart and can’t protect themselves, I’m 15 and like the 56 year old said he’s seen almost everything well so have I, but I don’t make a big deal of it. Also guess how I ended up getting here, I searched Youtube® and seen this link and didn’t believe there was such stuff on there.
