Yahoo announced today that the Yahoo Messenger app for the iPhone has arrived. It is free of charge and can be downloaded from the iTunes App Store.

The app comes equipped with the following features:

- Instant message
- Photo sharing
- Stealth settings
- Custom Status message
- Recent conversations archive
- Special idle state
- Additional settings

"If you have to leave the app for whatever reason, like a call comes in or you click a link in an IM that takes you to Safari, the Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone app will keep you signed in but change your status to idle," explains Product Manager Sarah Bacon. "That way you can continue to receive messages and provided you return to the app within ten minutes, pick up where you left off."

You can see a demo of the app in the following clip:

Yahoo notes that to download the app right now, users need to use the direct link, but starting tomorrow, it will be searchable in the app store as well.

Beejive IM and the upcoming Meebo will provide users exactly what they need. The last thing I want to do is add a separate application for each chat client. This may be good for those who solely use Yahoo IM as their chat client, but I’ll stick to Beejive IM.

I downloaded the app today. Eh. It’s alright. I still can’t change my icon, which is the only reason I downloaded the real Messenger app in the first place. Plus, like techknowl said, Beejive and IM Lite are better for people that use more than one messenger client. Maybe Yahoo and the guys over at all should team up and create a joint IM application. I’d even pay for that :) ;)
