The world’s largest retailer lets you put Los Lonely Boys and Double Trouble together on a disc, but questions about demand persist.

In an age where everyone seems to have a digital music player and a CD burner, Wal-Mart launches a service that may be a few years too late in arriving.

The service charges $4.62 USD plus 88 cents per song added to the CD. Some customization of the CD’s packaging can be done as well.

But does anyone really want this service? Wal-Mart will limit custom CDs to 20 songs. The tiny iPod Shuffle holds about 6 times that. Wal-Mart also does not list what digital rights management may be in use on the discs, which could limit how those songs are used by customers on other devices.

Wal-Mart feels there may be demand from areas of the country lacking broadband service, and cites continued strong demand of CDs in its stores as an indication of demand for custom CDs.
