Users of social networks are not very brand loyal according to Parks Associates "Web 2.0 & the New Net" report.

The report examined the social networking market and found that close to 40 percent of MySpace users have profiles on other social networking sites such as Facebook and Friendster. For smaller social networking sites loyalty to is even lower, with more than 50 percent of all users maintaining several profiles.

Close to half of all social network users are members at more than one site, while one in six belong to three or more sites. Parks says this leads to an environment connected by links, widgets, and users themselves.

"MySpace is a growing ecosystem and one that ironically now extends beyond MySpace itself," said John Barrett, the lead author of the report, Web 2.0 & the New Net.

Barret says this creates an environment for new social networking sites and application providers. "A handful of users are all it takes to connect new services to the MySpace-centered environment. From there it can begin to spread virally, assuming of course that it offers something people want."
