Various people will say that you can tell a lot about somebody by looking at their clothes, bookshelves, or DVD collections.  If we’re to apply the same idea to a website’s user base, applications might provide that window.  And for better or for worse, games tend to be extremely popular with MySpace’s users.

It’s been a full year since the MySpace Developer Platform launched, and Adam Lovallo had the idea to check in and see what’s happened.  Depending on what your definition of a game is, at least 12 or so of the top 25 apps should fit.  Apps that are definitely games – Mobsters and Mafia Wars – hold the first two spots.

This would seem to indicate that MySpace’s app users tend towards the younger side of the age spectrum.  If they stick with the site, then MySpace might be able to enjoy having a large user base for a long time, regardless of what sort of growth rate Facebook achieves.

Youngsters are also loved by advertisers, which could help MySpace make money.  The app market has become a mini-industry, with Lovallo noting, "Of the top 25 applications, 8 are developed by Zynga.  Contributing to Zynga’s install strength is their use of promotions on MySpace, including both banners and Sponsored app placement in the MySpace app gallery."

Even if financial or news-related apps would make MySpace look a little more sophisticated, then, the site’s probably doing just fine with a bunch of games.
