Commercial developers will be able to take advantage of a new license and build Virtual Earth maps into their applications.

MSN’s Search team disclosed on its blog and at PDC 2005 that the Javascript library for building non-commercial applications will be available in a commercial version. That version can be found at the ViaVirtualEarth site.

The commercial version will be available at no charge, with one requirement: “The geographical local search (What/Where search boxes in the current Virtual Earth application) are included in the application.”

Other commercial licenses will be available in January, according to the post, including “advertising revenue shares and pay-per-use options.”

MSN has also put up $1,000 for a Virtual Earth developer contest. The best use of Virtual Earth in an application, to be judged on several criteria, including “cool and sexiness factor.” Entries have to be submitted before October 14th.
