In yet another front in the desktop wars, MSN takes on Google and Yahoo with a new search tool.

The new service from MSN takes advantage of Microsoft’s in-house knowledge of its operating systems and the various APIs it jealously guards.

It’s called the MSN Search Toolbar with Windows Desktop Search. In addition to providing access to various MSN services, the new toolbar updates the desktop experience for Windows 2000 and XP users.

The MSN Search Toolbar may be downloaded for free. Its search function will be available from within familiar applications like Outlook and Windows Explorer.

The search service can riff through over 200 file types, including PDF, and it will sift through your e-mail attachments as well. One feature is a search-as-you-type function, speeding up the time needed to find an item.

Also, the service follows the Windows security model. Multiple users of a single machine who have separate logins will have any customized features for the search engine retained in their user profiles.
