Google has partnered with SpotMixer to launch a self-service video ad creation solution within the Google TV Ads platform. This is a very cool concept that should be huge for small businesses with tight advertising budgets. Basically, you create a ready-for-television commercial all on your own.


The solution is free to use, and they give you a library of available stock images and music that you can use also for free. These could potentially make for generic looking ads, but the beauty is that they allow you to upload your own content including images, video, and audio. It even lets you record your  voice directly from there. Plus, the solution dynamically changes templates and content to ensure that each video is different anyway.

Once your commercial is ready, you can set up a TV campaign from your AdWords account. The platform can even take your existing AdWords text ads and convert them to tailored video ads.

The service has been available in limited beta to a select few since September, and has received positive response. "Businesses that previously could not access national television advertising are now able to place their ads on TV with lower risk, and they are seeing strong results," says SpotMixer. Customers can track their TV ads just like they would with other online ad campaigns.

    Template ads seem to cost less, but in the long run (or even the short run) can cost far more than a custom-made ad from an award-winning producer like dotcoms CheapTVSpots or TVSellsRealEstate. Entrepreneurs are getting wise to the brand dilution of look-alike TV, web and mobile video ads. It’s only the most inexperienced businessperson and the one most likely to fail that would indulge in this penny-wise offer from Google and Spotmixer. Visual information is not compelling with repetition of content. Read a film history book. The audience gets board very quickly, just like I’ve become with these blogger-hyped services specifically engineered for investor consumption and the unfortunate uninitiated and naive small businessperson. For those of you that have not figured it out, the production of an ad is the least expensive part of any advertising campaign. Google lies in wait to sell the most expensive part, the air time, and likely at a premium or makes the client bid up rates against their other clients. Sure it’s good for Google. But it’s bad for small businesses. That’s how I see it. Any other opinions from non-techies?

      Biggy, you are right. “make your own TV ads” is fool’s marketing. Advertising on the internet already looks like the uninspired, incestuous commercials that run on every local TV station. If you haven’t the time, talent or money to produce good creative, you might as well staple flyers to telephone poles. Using a template is, by design, redundant. Royalty Free or Free stock imagery has a certain limited value. What’s next Google? Could I “learn Dentistry at home” or “enter the exciting field of Crime Scene Investigation” and study blood spatter on my computer? I strikes me that this is a karaoke mentality: everyone’s a singer…everyone has a valid opinion…everyone can tell a joke…everyone is a tv producer…YIKES youtube is a curious trainwreck of blathering, boring, Warholian stars for 15 minutes. There’s the old joke about advertising that “half you money is wasted – you just can’t tell which half.” Google is about to ruin that punchline.

    Biggy and Tam, you must work for ad agencies. Not to say there isn’t any validity to your point, but you know what, one does not get to see that many local commercials. I researched it for a small record company, and to run a local cable ad, you only get at max, one ad per hour and so far, I have not seen a small or local company buying up an ad for all 24 available hours.

    So I am sure you can create an ad using stock that no one has seen before, plus I am sure spotmixer adds to their repertoir on a daily basis.
