Facebook’s hired some impressive people before, luring key employees away from Google and other important companies.  Ted Ullyot stands out even in this crowd, though, as the man’s experience is in law, not tech, and he’s worked with and for people who are household names.

Jessica Guynn writes, "He began his legal career clerking for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and Judge J. Michael Luttig of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit (who is now Boeing’s senior vice president and general counsel) before being recruited by Kenneth Starr to Kirkland & Ellis."

Ullyot also worked on the White House’s response to the Valerie Plame mess and served as chief of staff to Alberto Gonzalez (stepping down in September 2005, before things got really bad).

Support, disagree with, or remain apathetic about the political aspect, but that’s an interesting resume.  And Guynn reports that Ullyot will be adding "vice president and general counsel of Facebook" to it next month.  His experience and connections should put the social network in a much better position to handle all sorts of issues.

The first things to get Ullyot’s attention are liable to be the ConnectU and StudiVZ lawsuits.
