Late last week, Microsoft employees tweeted about "exciting" and "super impressive" features that would be introduced this month.  Today, one of those features debuted, and Visual Search, as it’s known, is living up to the hype.

The beta version of Visual Search uses Silverlight technology to present searchers with image results instead of text.  50 results galleries span subjects including dog breeds, new cars, and movies in theaters, and it’s possible to sort everything according to relevant categories like lifespan, base price, and genre, respectively.

Visual Search, like Bing’s regular image search engine, does away with multiple pages of results and instead makes everything accessible by way of one long scrollbar.  Another bit of user-friendliness is that, if you hover over an image, a little bit of info is presented in and around the search box.

All in all, Visual Search is quite impressive.  One obvious limit is the number of results galleries, but this is just a beta version, and a post on the Bing Community Search Blog stated, "We’ll be expanding the Visual Search experience over the coming months . . ."

Bing Visual Search should get even better in the future, then, and in the meantime, this development lends a lot of credibility to the idea that more exciting features are on the way.

I don’t feel like installing something like Silverlight just to use some fancy looking search feature. Especially in an age when open standards (read: HTML5 and the Canvas tag) are about to replace propriety plugins.

Yeah, that is sort of a hurdle. I actually had to bug one of our oh-so-patient IT guys to install Silverlight on my computer (due to some admin rights issues, not complete technical incompetence). But Microsoft may be hoping that different Bing upgrades will drive Silverlight adoption.
