Looking for inroads to 30 million and growing Facebook users, PayPal is asking third-party developers to create the next killer PayPal app for the social network.

The winner of the contest, which launched today via PayPal’s Developer Network and runs through August 10, gets the grand prize of $10,000 for his or her effort. Prizes of $5,000 and $2,500 will awarded to runners up.

“We’ve heard from our developers that they have a passion for social networking sites like Facebook,” said Damon Williams, manager of PayPal’s Developers Program.

“With more than 153 million PayPal accounts, more than 260,000 registered PayPal developers, and more than 30 million active Facebook members, we believe that the time is right for our communities to come together.”

Third-party developers can create their Facebook apps through the PayPal Developer Network, the guidelines for which can be found at the documentation page.

Since Facebook opened up its network to application developers, the Internet has been in sort of an arms race to create applications they hope will catch on.

eBay, the parent company of PayPal recently launched its own widget for the site, called eBay To Go Facebook Application, designed to allow people to share entertaining items they’ve discovered on eBay with members of their network.

"As we continue to extend the PayPal developer platform, social networking sites like Facebook are a natural fit for our personal payments functionality," said Williams.

"We’ve developed our own Facebook application, and a handful of other third-party developers have done so too, but we’re only just scratching the surface."

By May, there were scores of Facebook applications created as companies and developers worked to reach this audience – from widgets that allow users to add content from College Humor or Forbes to their profiles to apps that help them find jobs and video.

Mashable has a nice roundup of 30 applications created for the open Facebook platform.

These applications are turning facebook into myspace and it is slowing down the site and making it waaay to cluttered. I cannot believe they are going to ruin it with all those apps.
