Amazon is allowing access to tools used during the development of web applications used the company’s e-commerce site.

Canadian and French independent developers will now be allowed to use these same tools to create additional utilities. By allowing access to these tools, which includes samples of code and applications, Amazon is looking to improve activity on their Canadian presence, as well the possible introduction of new, independently designed web applications.

According to Web Services Journal,

Whenever users of their sites make purchases on an Amazon site, the Web site developers, or their employees, earn referral fees.

For sellers on the Amazon Marketplace, the tools enable pricing updates for products and other capabilities. Developers can also build and sell Amazon-related applications to other websites.

To support these added capabilities, Amazon’s ECS 4.0, which shipped in October 2004, includes more detailed attributes and pricing on tens of millions of products in all categories, access to Amazon’s customer reviews, and massive image collection, and search by numerous attributes, including brand, price and category.
