Wikipedia Critical Of Baidu
Online encyclopedia Wikipedia is not happy with China’s most popular search engine Baidu.com. Wikipedia is accusing the search giant of violating its copyright license.
Florence Nibart-Devouard, chair of the Board of Trustees at the Wikimedia Foundation is asking Baidu to attribute Wikipedia entries that appear on Baidu Baike, the company’s Chinese language online encyclopedia.
"They do not respect the licence at all," said Florence Nibart-Devouard, chair of the Board of Trustees at the Wikimedia Foundation, during an interview at the Wikimania 2007 conference in Taipei. "That might be the biggest copyright violation we have. We have others," she added.
Wikipedia editors have requested a number of times that Baidu cite it when hosting Wikipedia content but have not received replies or seen any improvement in the situation. Most companies will comply with Wikipedia’s request after receiving an email explaining its copyright license according to PC Advisor.
Currently Wikimedia Foundation does not have plans to pursue legal action. It will continue to attempt to communicate its issues with Baidu.
"The foundation does not hold a copyright on the articles, the editors or the authors do, so there is very little we can do," said Nibart-Devouard. She went on to say that if pushed the foundation could try some type of class action.
