Google Spurs Speculation On Demand

The world of search engine speculation has been abuzz with the deeper meaning of the latest news about Google.

Would you believe this speculation has nothing to do with the recently disclosed SEC filing, where Google plans to place more shares on the stock market? Believe it.

Several sources online like John Batelle and Mediapost have been discussing a test Google seems to be undertaking with “alternative” search results. The cited example has been a search for [on demand]. (Notice how WebProNews is now following the trend of placing search criteria inside brackets? Right on the bleeding edge, that’s us.)

Go ahead, click on the link. You should see something like this where an alternative to the search criteria has been displayed not as a sponsored link atop the page, but right in the center with the standard search results.

The alternative results contain some kind of inline tracking data in the links, but they aren’t Google ads. The Googleplex tries out lots of tests regularly, and this looks like just another. But if this is possible, why wouldn’t Google make these results paid ads instead of just an additional sample set of results?
