Google has introduced some new features to Google Sites, the company’s web site creation and publishing app. The new features were made to make it easier for users to copy their site, and use more options to search and announce updates.

Google Sites now allows users to copy entire sites. You can do this by simply going to "Manage Site," then "General," and "Copy Site."

The "recent announcement" gadget received an upgrade, which gives users control over how much text is shown in the post summary. You can show full post content, and/or a thumbnail of the first photo in the post.

Users also now have more control over the search box. If you go to "Manage Site," "Site Layout," and "Configure Search," you can configure search across multiple site, so you can unify them.

Google Site Search

"Businesses and schools using Google Apps can configure it to search across all sites in their domains, which is useful for an intranet site," says software engineer Russ Vrolyk. "External search providers can also be used such as a Custom Search Engine or a Google Search Appliance."

With Google Sites search boxes, users can search across the sites’ content as well as attachments. Users can search across multiple sites, the entire domain, using a custom search engine, and/or using a Google Search Appliance.

I don’t know if I’m missing something but I hardly ever see any Google sites around – I dunno if enough awareness of the feature has been made. You’d expect a company like Google to offer the most comprehensive package for basic website builds. Does anyone know how many people are using it?

      Hey Adam,

I have myself not seen many… rather any Google site around. But I guess there are not many sites aroud. I mean to say that its not that people are choosing something else over Google. Its just that people who are serious about building an online presence might as well spend some time and effort and get a full blown website designed for them. And people who would have opted for Google sites may not have made any real efforts to optimize it or make it popular. Hence, we dont see many around.

Good points about why there aren’t many out there but I would love to see some samples. Has anyone compiled a list of “best Google sites” or something? The intranet thing interests me. Are they trying to compete with SharePoint?

Google is always introducing new features which will be accepted by most of its users. But I am not sure to what extent this feature will reach the people.
