Google has launched a new feature in Google Maps called Google Latitude, which allows users to share their locations with others using their smartphones.

Users can opt in via their Google account and then invite others to join Google Latitude. Once they have joined users will be able to see their friends profile picture on map through their smartphone or desktop.

Google says Latitude does not reveal the exact location of another person, but does give a good idea of where they are. Users will be able to click on an icon to call, text, IM or email the person they want to communicate with.

Users can also hide their locations from individual friend or all of their friends and can turn off Google Latitude whenever they want.

The smartphone platforms it supports include Android, Blackberry, Symbian S60, and Windows Mobile. Google says it is hoping to see Latitude on the iPhone soon.

Latitude is currently available in 27 countries and 42 languages.
