Matt Cutts Talks Google Caffeine Update

"Next-generation architecture for Google's web search"

Update: Hear what Matt Cutts has to say about Caffeine in this exclusive interview with WebProNews:

Original Article: Google may have a huge lead over its competitors in terms of market share, but the search giant isn’t resting on its laurels.  A next-generation infrastructure codenamed "Caffeine" has been unveiled, and it’s already available for individuals to test.

Fair warning: don’t expect Caffeine to introduce natural language recognition, search results from Twitter, or anything else too fancy.  Matt Cutts cautioned, "The Caffeine update isn’t about making some UI changes here or there.  Currently, even power users won’t notice much of a difference at all.  This update is primarily under the hood: we’re rewriting the foundation of some of our infrastructure."

Still, he continued, "[S]ome of the search results do change, so we wanted to open up a preview so that power searchers and web developers could give us feedback."

Head over to http://www2.sandbox.google.com if you intend to take Cutts and Google up on their invitation.  Keep an eye on characteristics including accuracy, comprehensiveness, and – perhaps especially – indexing speed.  Then, if you’ve got anything constructive to say, use the "Dissatisfied?  Help us improve" link at the bottom of the page and include the term "Caffeine" in your response.

Initial impressions have, as you can see below, been mostly positive.

Caffeine is likely to hit the mainstream in the near future.  Cutts referred to this sneak peek as "a preview of how the search results will change over the next few weeks and months."

  1. Caffeine seems fast and to the point when searched, will do more testing.

  2. Wine labels says:

Faster results return, but doesn’t allow the FF googlepreview to work.
Search results do appear different, we’re up on some and down on others.

  3. Is this to try and take more focus off of bing?

    • Doug Caverly says:

Caffeine’s supposedly been in the pipeline for months. Although I’m sure Google wouldn’t mind if it has that effect.

  4. Mike A. says:

I monitor my own site’s rankings and those of two other sites that I help with SEO. The changes were minor and all in my favor. At least in my initial look, it seems like some of the paid directories got knocked out of the top results. And that’s a good thing as far as I’m concerned.

  5. max says:

My website fell off the google rankings for some reason, is there a way to contact google or mat cutts to ask why? its a fairly “crusty” ole domain thats been around a long time and had pretty good page rank and authority..

  6. Kain says:

I havent used Google much since Bing came out but tried the new version, I searched for Google Caffine and it gave one extra news result 9 hours old.

Twitter gave newer results(relevance was about the same).

I think this is just a weak attempt to get attention away from bing.

This is hardly newsworthy. I think if Matt Cutts lost his car keys it would make headlines if this is anything to go by.

  7. What is meant by how “accurate” the results are? Is it just if you use a long search term whether it actually finds the sort of stuff you are looking for?

Anyway, I found we were ranking pretty high with Caffeine. Long may it last!

  8. When comparing results I find a lot more hompages coming up on the SERP’s and less subdomains and articles being listed but that’s only for a few keywords I searched for. This will make a big difference to some bloggers and webmasters, for good and bad.

  9. Hicham says:

The sandbox shows increase in the shear number of results comparing to normal google search. I am eager to see the future of this.

  10. SEO says:

Hey guys found a cool tool to compare all sorts of search results
    http://www.goobinghoo.com

    Enjoy.

  11. before i was not very much aware about www2.sandbox.google.com. I go through this website but it’s not different to google.com

    please write something about sandbox.google.com.

  12. Rakeback says:

All i’ve noticed is that it seems to give more weight to exact match domains. This also seems to be crossing over to normal google.

  13. Sounds Good! Thanks for the information.

  14. Natural says:

I believe that efforts should look for other ways, a search engine should be able to evaluate a site, blog, otherwise. Consider the following I have good relationship, I have many friends, but that does not mean I have a good product. I believe that Google analytics should be part of the evaluation of the position, stating the rate of rejection of the browser.

  15. Amar Patel says:

    Thanks fo sharring information.

  16. Ajay says:

It may provide better result and better feasibility.

  19. stan leung says:

my concern is with useless less

they show up faster thanmy site even though my site is newer and has relevent content unliek their sites but because they are using blog software they rank better then mine

  20. Vitaliy says:

I can see faster indexing, cleaner pages, faster results, faster backward linking, and possibly deeper indexing but I just don’t like to see totally white hat SEO getting penalized because of black hat movers. I just don’t think that is really fair, now I understand that Google isn’t doing this on purpose and certainly not picking out individual sites, etc, etc, but still I have felt a strong effect, a negative one at that.

When I see my site position dancing around like crazy, it’s not easy to deal with. When I see my traffic jumping around it’s also not easy. and When I see that I can no longer take over positioning like I used to, or when my posts, are being ranked to the top, then hours to days later, drop off the index somewhere deep, or into supplemental, it’s really odd behavior.

  21. Angielski says:

Heya i am for the first time here. I found this board and I find It truly useful & it helped me out much. I hope to give something back and aid others like you helped me.
