Well, it turns out the rumors were true.  Peter Thiel, who sits on Facebook’s board of directors, recently confirmed that Mark Zuckerberg’s company tried to acquire Twitter last year.  Thiel also got into discussions concerning stock values and ad revenue.

As we suggested in November, stock values actually had a large role to play in the Twitter negotiations.  Remember how Microsoft made an investment implying that Facebook was worth $15 billion – and then the world laughed?  Thiel admitted to Spencer E. Ante, "The deal would have to be done with Facebook stock.  And then you have to figure out how much the stock is worth."

Still, the lines of communication are said to be open between Facebook and Twitter, so we aren’t looking at another Ballmer/Yang sworn enemies’ standoff.

Also, Thiel indicated that Facebook might be worth quite a lot, after all.  If someone plastered the site with ads, for example, he said, "There’s no reason to think we couldn’t do $1 billion a year in sales . . . .  That’s about what MySpace does."

So an acquisition may yet take place.  Only, since the funding fairies gave Twitter $35 million last month, it’s probably best not to hold one’s breath while waiting for it.
