Ciena filed a complaint charging Nortel Networks with infringing on six patents related to Ciena’s communications networking systems and technology.

Ciena has made significant investment in research and development in technology and the Company’s efforts and investment have resulted in innovation and advancements. Many of these advancements are the subject of patents issued to Ciena by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. In such cases where Ciena believes there is infringement on these patents by third parties, Ciena will seek to protect and enforce its intellectual property rights and technology leadership on behalf of its shareholders.

Ciena has not specified how much in damages it seeks.

“The lawsuit came as a two-year agreement between the companies to not sue each other ended. At the time, the companies said they would look to find ways they could work together through licensing agreements rather than continuously going to court to settle disputes.”

According to CNET, “A Nortel representative declined to comment on the current lawsuit, saying the company had not yet received a copy of the complaint.”
