Microsoft and Netflix announced today that 1 million Xbox LIVE Gold members have activated Netflix’s movie streaming service since the two companies formed a partnership last November.

Since that time Xbox users have watched 1.5 billion minutes of movies and TV episodes via Netflix’s Watch Instantly service.

"Adding Netflix to our ever-growing library of 30,000 movies and TV shows makes Xbox 360 the best value in home entertainment," said John Schappert, corporate vice president of Interactive Entertainment, LIVE, Software and Services Business at Microsoft.

"With over 1 million activations and 1.5 billion minutes watched to date, Netflix is a great win for Xbox living rooms nationwide. These families are getting more entertainment from Xbox 360 than from any other device connected to their TVs."

The Netflix service provides Xbox LIVE Gold subscribers, who pay $50 a year to Microsoft for a number of applications, to instantly watch content from Netflix on a TV via the Xbox 360 console if they are members of Netflix.

"With more than 100,000 titles on DVD and 12,000 movies and TV episodes available to watch instantly, there’s no better way to enjoy movies than Netflix," said Netflix Chief Marketing Officer Leslie Kilgore.

Im going to buy me an xbox and get me netflicks. Also that is something cool to have on the Xbox so you can order it anytime you want to.

When trying to decide on a new media player for the home theater last fall, I ended up going with an Xbox 360, and the Netflix instant service tie-in was the final deciding factor.

While it works better than I’d hoped, the big problem now is the lack of available content. After a few months, I’m already about out of anything interesting that’s available on the Netflix instant service. I’ve ended up with a lot in my instant queue that wouldn’t be there other than because it’s all they have available. And so many titles still have a few episodes or extras that are “available on disc only”.

It’s a great proof-of-concept, but if they don’t add a lot more content real soon, I’m going to end up dropping the service. At this point, it almost feels like it’s just a lead-in to their regular Netflix service.
