I think Google is trying to be your personal storefront. I wrote about that here, http://digg.com/u118gZ
It has been discovered that Google Profiles are now letting users enable the option to create a vanity URL. In other words, if you check a box, your Google profile page will become htp://www.google.com/profiles/whatever-your-gmail-name-is.

MG Siegler at TechCrunch writes: "The problem with Google’s movement towards becoming more of a social entity is that it lacks one cohesive place to tie everything together...but actually it has such an area..." this profile page, which will now become more accessible as a result of the vanity URLs.
This is quite interesting to me considering I was only recently talking about Gmail as Google's real social network. Still, it will take some kind of extra promotion of the feature to kick these profiles into high use I think. People are not necessarily going to know they have such an option.
Vanity URLs may have some extra search-related incentive, as Siegler points out, saying "it will undoubtedly help them show up more often in actual Google Searches."
To set up your vanity URL, simply go to "My Account" from your Google Homepage, then click "edit profile." From there, you will find the option at the bottom of the page.
