Amazon Shows Interest In Twitter Referrals

New Amazon Associates Program feature makes sharing links easy

A company with a market cap of $51 billion has lent some weight to the idea that it's possible to make money off Twitter.  Early this morning, Amazon launched a "Share on Twitter" feature designed to bring in buyers and reward the specific people responsible for doing so.

The Share on Twitter feature comes as part of the Amazon.com Associates Program and is visible on an omnipresent control panel.  Associates are supposed to just visit a product page and then click a button in order to post a pre-generated message (which can be personalized) and shortened link to their Twitter accounts.

Next, as Amazon explained in a post on the Official Amazon Associates Blog, "When Twitter users click on the link in your post and make a qualifying sale, you'll earn referral fees.  That's it."

People are almost guaranteed to use the feature since it's so simple.  What'll be interesting to see is how that plays out.  In some instances, individuals are sure to overuse it, driving away their followers.  Elsewhere, folks might hit a sweet spot, piquing their followers' interest and selling more than a few books (or CDs, or DVDs, or whatever).

We're not likely to receive any official stats on the matter, but we'll at least keep an eye out for them and any anecdotal accounts of how the Share on Twitter feature fares.
