Twitter, which is now two years and eleven months old, has outlived a lot of startups.  It's attracted a huge user base, and arguably achieved a level of mainstream acceptance.  But Twitter still lacks a business model, and so it was rather groundbreaking for cofounder Biz Stone to suggest one earlier today.

Stone told Fiona Ramsay, "We are noticing more companies using Twitter and individuals following them."  He then continued, "We can identify ways to make this experience even more valuable and charge for commercial accounts."

 

Since Dell alone has over 80 Twitter accounts, this approach could prove extremely profitable.  There's not really a popular alternative to Twitter, and the recession has left corporations desperate to reach consumers, so it might be a rare business that would abandon the site to avoid some small fees.

The average individual user, meanwhile, would be left alone, so Twitter's reputation and growth rate wouldn't be jeopardized by the move.

Now all that remains is for Twitter to actually do something.  Perhaps starting on the path to profitability will be the company's birthday present to itself.
