Members Of Congress Embrace YouTube

Senate, House have new channels

It looks like some politicians are starting to get the hang of this Internet thing.  Two new YouTube channels have been established, and certain members of the House and Senate intend to use them as communications and outreach tools.

The creation of The Senate Hub and The House Hub was announced in a video featuring John Boehner, Mitch McConnell, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid.  As explained by Reid, the pages represent an effort to "make your government more transparent and accessible."

YouTube users can check this effort out by going to either page and selecting a state of interest.  If a politician from the region has a YouTube channel, users will then be able to click through to it.

The concept's interesting, to say the least.  A post on the YouTube Blog explains that politicians are "posting videos direct from their Washington offices, as well as clips of floor speeches and committee hearings alongside additional behind-the-scenes footage from Capitol Hill. . . .  The House Hub and Senate Hub are the digital equivalents of a backstage pass to your government."

And they may also be ways for the average person to respond to officials.  Boehner said, "I hope you'll also take some time to share videos and comments with us."
