Yahoo Announces oneConnect iPhone App

Post to Twitter Post to Facebook

Messaging, email, and social networks galore

The average iPhone has a lot of applications on it.  Some are free, some aren't, and regardless, they make a bit of a mess taken all together.  Now Yahoo's seeking to cut through the clutter - and carve out a place of importance in the U.S. mobile market - with an app called oneConnect.

oneConnect looks promising.  For starters, it's free and should be made to support other devices within a few months' time.  Then, in terms of functionality, oneConnect hits a lot of important and popular areas.

Users can expect to encounter a "[f]ull-featured address book that integrates contacts from the user's Yahoo! Address Book, iPhone and social networks," according to a company statement.  "The initial version of Yahoo! oneConnect supports networks including Bebo, Dopplr, Facebook, Flickr, Friendster, Last.fm, MySpace, Twitter and YouTube."

Furthermore, there's "[i]ntegrated mobile messaging with your friends via SMS and Yahoo! Messenger, including support for avatars, photos, and emoticons," and something called "Favorites" that Yahoo considers "[a] simple way to keep your most important people close at hand to check on status, call or send a quick message or email."

Yahoo may not win over every Apple-lover with this offering, but it's an interesting application.  Odds are good that oneConnect will at least attract a fair number of users wanting to give it a try.

The application is currently

The application is currently available for US users only. And that leads me to a last question which hopefully Yahoo will answer in the coming days. Why not release the applications in other countries?
