Google Maps Gives Users More Control

Edit listings or create markers

Not too long ago, Google Maps started allowing its users to move place markers.  Now businesses' existing details can be altered, and completely new markers can be added, as well.

In regards to the first update, this could come in handy for adding websites or phone numbers.  As an extreme example, Ramesh Balakrishnan writes on the LatLong Blog, "You can even mark that a business has closed to save someone an extra trip."

Of course, this brings up the possibility that people would mark open businesses as closed (a real estate company that withholds security deposits, for example), but Google has prepared for this.  Balakrishnan writes, "[Y]ou'll still be able to see the original listing information along with the history of changes made."

To move to the second part of the development, then, it seems that users will have the option of adding whatever new stores, statues, or fire hydrants happen to catch their eyes.  With construction a constant issue in various cities, this has the potential to be extremely helpful.

Also, regardless of whatever headaches they cause, the release of these updates should, at least, signal that nothing went terribly wrong after the ability to move markers was introduced.
