A number of outsiders have visited without mentioning this detail, but I'm convinced that War's "Why Can't We Be Friends?" song is on a permanent loop within Google's Chinese headquarters.  The latest evidence: a special Google doodle and fireworks graphics celebrating the Chinese New Year.

Of course, it's not as if there aren't plenty of other examples; earlier today, word leaked out that Google China may offer legal music downloads, and not too long ago, the company unveiled a new, couldn't-be-faster-to-type domain name.

We'll return to the recent examples exhibited on Google China's site, however.  The most obvious one is a Google doodle displaying three rats and a calendar.  Haochi Chen connects this to the Year of the Rat, and explains that an additional symbol "loosely translates as luck and wealth."

Elsewhere, Philipp Lenssen points to pictures of firecrackers next to AdWords results, and it seems appropriate that Hong Kong Disneyland features prominently.

It should be interesting to see what's next.  Also, we'll do our best to see what's happening with "Why Can't We Be Friends?" should Google China solidify that free music deal.
