MySpace isn't yet letting developers loose on its huge user base. The social network is quite close, though, and has launched the MySpace Developer Platform as a way of allowing developers to get in some practice.
In what's being described as "a one-month application development period," developers have been given a chance to familiarize themselves with three sets of APIs, and, in a slightly limited fashion, build and test apps. Developers seem, if we're to oversimplify the matter, very excited about this.
More than 1,600 people have joined the MySpace Developer Platform's forum within the last 24 hours. Also, only 218 posts have been made, so it seems like the majority of them have joined out of an interest in the subject rather than a need to get questions answered.
We can only imagine (and kind of recoil at) the flood of applications that is sure to result from this effort. Still, the month-long sandbox period should give everyone a chance to iron out some kinks, and certain apps have always seemed like they'd be a match for MySpace's more "colorful" profiles.
Take the month to do as you see fit, then, whether that involves rolling up your sleeves and doing some typing or deleting your profile and fleeing in terror.
