Facebook Not A Favorite Of British CIOs
Obsession with applications a turn-off
A survey of 12 people is unlikely to accurately represent an entire segment of the population. Still, British chief information officers don't seem too excited about Facebook, as a new poll found that only one out of 12 uses
the site for business reasons.
Silicon.com's Andy McCue makes clear that the jury members don't hate online networking; a couple of them use Facebook in a social capacity, and LinkedIn, Plaxo, and Xing were mentioned in a positive light. Mark Zuckerberg's baby just didn't so well overall.
Richard Steel, the CIO of Newham's London Borough, told McCue, "I get irritated at the constant stream of silly applications. I also have concerns about its default privacy settings."
Facebook's trying to address that first problem with a profile cleanup feature. And Beacon-related issues aside, the second issue can be fixed by fiddling with the settings as often as you like. Still, it's not like British CIOs are the only people who are worried about these things.
Meanwhile, the favorite means of business networking among the Silicon.com jury seemed to be traditional face-to-face meetings.
