TiVo To Offer Online Video

Announced At CES

TiVo has announced that its users will be able to select video from the Internet for playback on televisions through its digital video recording service.

The new feature, unveiled at the International Consumer Electronics Show, will allow subscribers to use "Season Pass" to record video content available on Real Simple Syndication, or RSS feeds. The online videos could range from broadcast nightly newscast to more specialty videos pulled from blogs or independent Internet sites.

Users would have to use TiVo's software on PCs for the feature and the company said it will offer a guide within its TV-based menu to record online video sources too. The online recording feature will launch in March with new version of the TiVo desktop software, which will cost $24.95 for new users. It will be a free upgrade for subscribers who already own the program.

"By adding the Season Pass functionality to web video viewing, we are providing consumers a new way to easily and automatically access the content they want to watch on their television sets," said Tom Rogers, the president and CEO of TiVo.

"TiVo is building toward the dream of providing one stop for all content, through one box, integrated into one interface, accessible through one simple remote control. With TiVo providing this web video feature, along with 20,000 Amazon titles, millions of songs, thousands of music videos, and an enormous collection of photos, we have already gone a long way toward building out the dream."
