Google News Testing Comments Feature

The people and organizations that form the focus of stories appearing on Google News will be able to add their comments to articles featuring them.

The new comment functionality should begin appearing on the US version of Google News this week. Google's Dan Meredith and Andy Golding posted about the comments rollout at the Google News blog.

"Our long-term vision is that any participant will be able to send in their comments, and we'll show them next to the articles about the story," they said.

"Comments will be published in full, without any edits, but marked as "comments" so readers know it's the individual's perspective, rather than part of a journalist's report."

Unlike the typical comment mechanism used by numerous sites, Google will require news participants to email their comments. Google also plans to verify the identities of those commenters, an active approach for a company that's algorithm-driven, especially with Google News.

We haven't seen any comments on Google News as of press time, likely due to the measured rollout Google will use with the feature.
