Google to be More Transparent in 2009

Maybe Others Will Too

Matt Cutts of Google's Search Quality Team made a post on the Google Webmaster Blog indicating that a goal of his this year is to make Google more transparent and to communicate more.

"That led me to a personal goal for 2009: if I give a substantial conference presentation (not just a question and answer session), I'd like to digitize the talk so that people who couldn't attend the conference can still watch the presentation." This should make many webmasters happy, particularly those who hang on Matt's every word.

Cutts starts by offering this 20-minute video recapping his "Preventing Virtual Blight" presentation from the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco that took place in November. This "director's cut" was filmed a little bit later at the Googleplex:

Well, that's not the same as attending a conference right? You don't have his slides to look at and help you learn visually. Oh wait a minute, he provided those too:

A lot of people are going to be greatly appreciative if Cutts does this with all his presentations. Perhaps he will inspire other presenters to follow suit, making more great conference info available for free from the comfort of one's own computer (or phone). I don't know how thrilled conference sponsors will be if this becomes a popular trend, but these things are always liveblogged, reported on, Tweeted about, etc. anyway. This way, you know you're getting the entire presentation as it was intended.

Sounds good - the more

Sounds good - the more easily accessible information there is out there the better. It's great that we'll be able to watch any presentations as they were given, rather than second hand reporting which may miss out important points.

Google

its good to know that google is going to be more transparent, as it will be good for the searchers and seo .

Matt Cutts is right

When Matt Cutts comes on video or answers people, he is going to do what he says, in the best interest of Google.

Google has relied on Matt Cutts over the years, as he has guided them to a great balance!

this is good to see and will

this is good to see and will help i think

I'm not sure that this

I'm not sure that this counts as more transparency - basically information that is already going out is just being more effectively disseminated.

RE: I'm not sure that this

Matt's words, but it does make the information more widely available. Let's more people "see in".

Google

Transparency would be great, or at least some where to get answers from the great google.

Thank you

Thank you for the great info. Really glad that i spent time watching it. Cheers! :-)

Google More Transparent = Good!

Id like to see Google much more accountable and available to its customers. Many Adwords advertisers who spend hundreds even thousands a day cant even get a support phone number. It does appear sometimes that Google likes to appear a bit mysterious and intangible to prerserve its cult-esque status.

I enjoyed that I watched it

I enjoyed that I watched it all.

It's especially good for newbies but there are tips in there for everybody
