While Twitter lacks a business model it does not mean other businesses can't take advantage of the microblogging service by using it to spread their message.

Dell is one such company that has been successful using Twitter to market its brand and reach a large audience. The computer manufacturer says Twitter has helped it bring in $1 million in revenue over the past year and a half via sales Tweets and other promotions.

Twitter users who follow Dell can then click over to buy a product or share the information with others.

Dell started using Twitter in March of 2007 after the South by Southwest conference in Austin, Texas.

Dell now has 65 Twitter groups on its site, with 2,638 followers on the DellOutlet feed.

"A million dollars isn't a lot of money, but it shows that people want to sign up for feeds," Bob Pearson, head of communities and conversation for Dell, told internetnews.com. Pearson favors Twirl, a free desktop client that allows user to manage feeds from Twitter and other microblogging sites.

Twitter is expected to roll out a business model in 2009, which could include premium corporate accounts as a way to monetize the service.

In the meantime look for more companies to follow Dell's lead and use Twitter to market their brands and connect with their customers.
