Google Wants Chrome To Go Bigtime Next Year

Removal of beta tag, pre-installation on PCs

A market share of 0.74 percent is not good for morale at most companies, and perhaps all the less so at Google, where (Lively debacle aside) things tend to go well.  So, starting in January, the search giant's going to take some rather unusual steps towards improving Google Chrome's position.

Sundar Pichai, a vice president of product management, told Murad Ahmed that Chrome should be brought out of beta sometime around that period.  Think of Gmail and its immortal beta tag as you process that fact.

Then we get to something even less in step with Google's traditional nature.  Pichai said, "We will probably do distribution deals. . . .  [W]e could work with an OEM and have them ship computers with Chrome pre-installed."  Or pay manufacturers in order to stick users with the browser by default, in other words.

There will be advertising campaigns, too, as Pichai continued, "We will throw our weight behind it. . . .  [O]nce we get it out of beta we will work hard at getting the word out, promoting to users, and marketing will be a part of that."

Google Wants Chrome To Go Bigtime Next Year

Keep an eye out for some changes in the pie charts put out by Net Applications, then; Google doesn't appear to at all enjoy being just two spots above "other."

With good marketing strategy

With good marketing strategy (that G usually has) Chrome could actually steal some percentage of users away from IE. FF users will probably stick to FF as previously mentioned, the plugins are must have for most web developers (who generally use FF).

I'm always curious to see in

I'm always curious to see in which direction Google goes next. They've got a lot of power and it would be wise on their part to branch into other avenues.

Chrome not a safe bet

Chrome will quickly find out that web designers are not keen on making their sites compatible with yet another browser, and then many applications will not work on Chrome just like somtimes happens with Opera and Safari.

Yah

The typical corporate problem.

It is not a bad browser, but lacking the community of external developers and extensions made by them gives it the place of "some exotic, nice to try but never really use". Guess what "We don't have a policy to receive free help and ideas. Nobody could be smarter than us".

Sad to say but G matures and starts acting like a dinosaur.

google chrome

before that I never application google chrome yet, but I'm not sure about security good working.

Here's a novel idea.

Here's a novel idea.   Open it up to add-ons.  While I thought Chrome was okay, I can't live without certain Firefox extensions.

Chrome

I hesitate to use even upgraded versions of Chrome, since my last experience using it (first version) left my computer compromised; have they fixed the security issues beyond all doubt?

Google Chrome in shipped PC's?

It will be interesting to see if Google ties into PC's like Microsoft has. Marketshare could be picked up very quickly this way.
