eBay Pledges Not to Sell Inaugural Tickets

Strong demand for tickets

eBay is saying "yes you can't" to would be sellers wanting to scalp tickets on the site to President -elect Barack Obama's inauguration on January 20.

eBay reached the decision after meeting with officials from the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies.

Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), head of the committee said earlier this week she was writing both eBay and Craigslist asking the Web sites not to sell any inauguration tickets.

Tickets to the inauguration are supposed to be free but have been showing up on some sites for as much as $40,000. The public can contact their Member of Congress or U.S. Senators to request tickets to the event.

Tickets will not be handed out to congressional offices until the week before the inauguration and will require in-person pick-up.

"Any website or ticket broker claiming that they have inaugural tickets is simply not telling the truth," said Howard Gantman, Staff Director for the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies.

"Tickets for the swearing-in of President-elect are all provided through members of Congress, and the President-elect and Vice President-elect through the Presidential Inaugural Committee. We urge the public to view any offers of tickets for sale with great skepticism."

About time someone stopped this horrible crime!

Leave it to big brother (AKA Ebay) to step in  and take care of this ;-) We all can sleep much better now!

EBAY SELLS NOTHING !

The Title of this article should CORRECTLY state : Ebay Will NOT ALLOW sales of Inaugural tickets. This is Ebay's New Gig. Being "Minister of what They Sell". Ebay Sells NOTHING.

a bit too much?

I think 40k for a bad crowded view is ridiculous. On election day, I quite enjoyed having 2 TV channels up and joining in the massive election twitter channel at the same time.
