Stepped away on Saturday afternoonSaying that Google AdSense is popular would be something of an understatement. So, when the program's site became inaccessible on Saturday, people became understandably unhappy.
The situation was reminiscent of when much of Germany lost its access to Google on Thursday. Both outages lasted roughly two hours, and the causes remain unknown. Also, no advance notice was given in either case.

Google Adsense Was Down Saturday
Barry Schwartz highlights a warning that AdWords would be out of action for a bit. "However," he continues, "the last AdSense announcement was posted in Google Groups back on January 11th with a heads up about maintenance to take place on Saturday, Jan 12, starting at 10am PT."
So reactions ranging from anger ("WTF?!") to apparent disbelief ("Google Adsense is down???") ensued. We haven't yet encountered anyone who's sworn off AdSense, but there are probably one or two of them, as well.
Anyway, if you want an explanation, consider keeping an eye on the AdSense Help Forum. Or try the Inside AdSense blog, where the most recent post discusses "Diagnosing and treating revenue fluctuations (Part II)."

A bigger AdSense scandal
I'm surprised there hasn't been more outrage about something else.
According to this article, Google is now requiring its 10 million AdSense users to open a new "Google account" or change their email address if they're not using Gmail!
were adsense ads down or
were adsense ads down or was the adsense reporting/management site down?
The adsense site has been down multiple times over the last 6 months, but I usually still see ads on my sites

Google Groups is in brownout, too
I wonder if this outage is related to the system-wide meltdown at Google Groups. Many group owners have been unable to update their html group pages or upload files for over a month, while Google issues occassional remain-calm-all-is-well announcements or premature announcements that the bug is fixed ("Mission Accomplished" banners, anyone?). I've seen several posts on the user group site to the effect that they are defecting back to Yahoo! Groups.
