TV Mobile Phone Shipments In Japan Hit 20 Million

1 million shipped in December

Total shipments in Japan of mobile phones compatible with digital terrestrial television broadcast services reached 20 million units for the first time since the service was launched in 2006.

The figure was reached in December, due to the shipments of more than 1 million mobiles during the month according to the Telecommunications Carriers Association.

The popular digital TV service, called OneSeg, allows Japanese mobile users to watch TV programs for free. The terrestrial broadcasts don't have digital rights management software, making it easier for cell phone makers to add recording features into mobiles. Current phones can record a TV show onto a memory card to be viewed later.

OneSeg is also popular on laptop PCs, new car navigation systems and other portable devices including music and vide players.  The service is preferred in portable devices because it does not take as much processing power as conventional high-definition digital TV service.
