Google Looks Closely At Australian Elections

Sick of American politics?  Well, this may not make you feel any better, but Google’s got a brand new website offering a detailed view of the Australian equivalent.

The site’s called 2007 Australian Federal Election, and Google appears to have thrown just about everything it’s got at the creation.  “Follow Australian politics with our map, videos, gadgets & more,” invites one heading.

That about sums it up, really - Google intends to provide a wide-ranging and in-depth resource to all Australian voters.  On the Official Google Blog, Julian Sonego and Rob Shilkin wrote “[h]ere’s hoping Australians will find them useful and even fun” in reference to the new site’s tools.

“It’s our view that democracy on the web works - and the web can work for democracy,” they continued.

That’s fine, except that it sounds a little far-reaching.  Which is fine, too, of course, but announcements related to the Australia-centric site have stressed that it is the first of its kind to be made by Google.  The implicit hint, now, is that others might follow.

So we may be able to focus on American politics, after all.  Oh joy.
