The Day the Web Goes Silent

Not a moment of silence, but a full day of silence is planned by US-based webcasters, lots of them, in protest of the Copyright Royalty Board's increase in royalty rates. Internet radio stations argue the rate hikes are disproportionate and will shut down the entire Web radio industry.

The Day the Web Goes Silent
Next Tuesday, June 26, thousands of US webcasters will go silent, including big names like Yahoo, Rhapsody, MTVOnline, and Pandora, as well as more local offerings like BluegrassCountry.org/WAMU.org and RadioMilwaukee.

Some webcasters will cut off their streams entirely while others will play static, ocean sounds, or similar fare with periodic public service announcements of what is happening.

"The arbitrary and drastic rate increases set by the Copyright Royalty Board on March 2nd threaten the very livelihood of thousands of webcasters and their millions of listeners throughout the country," said Jake Ward, a spokesperson for the SaveNetRadio Coalition.

"The campaign to save Internet radio - a genuine grassroots movement comprised of hundreds of thousands of webcasters, artists and independent labels, and Net radio listeners - has quickly brought this issue to the national forefront and the halls of Congress, but there is still more to be done before the approaching deadline of July
15th.

"On Tuesday, thousands of webcasters will call on their millions of listeners to join the fight to save Internet radio and contact their Congressional representatives to ask for their support of the Internet Radio Equality Act."

After July 15, the CRB plans to impose its new rates, a policy that is retroactive, requiring Net radio providers pay the new rates for the previous 17 months as well.

Hi Will a day without free

Hi Will a day without free music matter? People unwilling to pay for music are gonna go “meh” and turn on their MP3 players. They’re not going to become advocates and start calling their congressmen. Unless you were really serious and wanted to send a point — and shut down for an entire month — then nothing will be accomplished here. I think “Internet Radio Slowdown Day” would have been more appropriate. Play only songs from independent artists and artists who have negotiated favorable rates, interspersed with good, compelling ads that move people to action. As for me, I’ll crank up LaunchCast Plus and listen to commercial-free uninterrupted music all the worklong day today. And if that fails, the only one getting complaints from me will be Yahoo!, not my congressman. (And while waiting for Yahoo!’s response, I’d be listening to my iPod full of legitimately paid-for music.) __________________

Day the web goes Silent.

Hi:My name is Art Durivage Program Director and owner of internet radio station Widemusic.com,my station has been on the air for over 4 years,we provide a large variety of music and syndicated entertainment.I started this station when I retired,I always wanted to be in broadcasting so when I found out about internet radio,I started widemusic.com,I have several people working for me and we do this for no pay.I run several psa's but make now money. We have a large listener base, alot of dedicated listeners. If these copyright laws go in effect at 300%,there's no way I could afford to continue on with my station. So I'm asking all of you who listen to internet radio to please contact your congressmen and Senators and ask them to please support the Internet Radio Equality Bill,at least with this bill we will have a fee that hopefully most of the stations will be able to afford. So if you could do this, then internet radio will hopefully go on for years to come. Thanks alot.Just go to savenetradio.org and see how you can contact your local congressmen and senators. Thanks alot,Art Durivage.Widemusic.com.

starving listeners

The world is starving for food, not music. Go grow some.
The internet and its popular sites are a disgrace to man's inefficiency in helping othere who are insecure.

Compromise

How about a compromise?

Visit The Hunger Site each day and click the big button, then head over to SaveNetRadio to learn more about the issue of web broadcasting and royalties.

That's got to be more useful than posting snippy I'm-so-freaking-superior comments on stories.

Internet Radio

All webcasters are welcome to use our music royalty free! Peace & long live Web Radio!
9spine

Thank you for giving me

Thank you for giving me permission to use your music royalty free. :) Dumbass! Figures you would give it away for free because everyone knows the music isn't that great to listen to.

Peace & long live the Internet!
