Facebook Hits Milestone. What's it Mean?

Related conversations...

FacebookFacebook has reached the 100 million user milestone (if that is the real number). Some have reached different figures, and if you include inactive profiles, the number may even be much greater.

More Significant?

MySpace passed the 100 million mark a couple years ago, but some believe Facebook's doing is more significant. Many of MySpace's profiles are inactive, while Facebook claims to not count their inactive ones.

That's not the only reason some view this as more significant. Objectives are also taken into consideration.

"Yes, MySpace got there first, but they had no platform and they had no clear vision - not when it comes to monetization, and not when it comes to organizing the chaos that is MySpace into something meaningful," says Stan Schroeder at Mashable.

"Facebook hasn't been the first or even the second social network, but they've managed to build this huge user base despite fierce competition; furthermore, their platform (although not without flaws) shows that they know where they want to take it from here," he adds.

They May Lose a Few

Eric Eldon at Venture Beat points out that 20% of that 100 million have opted in to the optional (so far) redesign of Facebook, which is available for viewing here. It is possible that the new design will turn off a number of users, who will seek social networking refuge elsewhere.

The loss of the ever-popular Scrabulous app isn't sitting well with users either, but I doubt that will be the deal-breaker. Facebook seems to be at the height of its popularity, with more and more people "dissing" MySpace in favor of the "more sophisticated" social network.

duplicate

Also are facebook counting duplicate profiles. I suggest there are a small percentage of users who have more than one profile.
