Free Music On Last . fm Drives CD And Download Sales

Last . fm said today that its free-on- demand music service, launched in January, has increased CD and download sales 119 percent through its partnership with Amazon.com.

The CBS owned site said that its users have purchased 66 percent more albums and singles they did before the launch of its free-on-demand service.

"In just over two months it's become clear that people will buy CDs and downloads if they get access to the kind of service we offer," said Martin Stiksel, Last . fm Co-Founder." "No one else can give music fans this amount of music for free -- but more importantly also drive their discovery, as we do through our unique recommendation engine."

Stiksel said that the amount of time users spend on the site has also increased by 188 percent since January.

The site features profile pages for each artist and a catalog of more than 5 million tracks. The company has singed deals with EMI, Universal, Warner Music and Sony BMG, along with a number of independent labels.

Besides Amazon, Last . fm has affiliate deals with iTunes and 7Digital. Affiliate links on the site's music players allows users to click on any song they are listening to and buy singles or full albums from its partners.

yes I agree with this comment - digitalTRAFFIC site hits, track downloads, sales etc have all increased after connecting with last.fm - very cool site for new / unsigned artists.
