China Cartoons Remind Surfers To Behave

Tooling around the Internet from a Chinese connection could be interrupted by a pair of cartoon cops who tell people to back away from questionable content.

Internet portal firm Sohu designed the male and female cartoon cops for Beijing's Net monitors. It's the population who will have to see them every 30 minutes.

An AP report said the cartoon cops will start popping up on September 1st. Viewers will be asked to obey the law as they browse the Internet.

Beijing has a particular fear of pro-democratic content, which runs counter to the central Communist government. Their Internet userbase should surpass those from the United States in a couple of years, according to the report.

Unlike US users, the surveillance used in China is far more pervasive and punitive for those who indulge in discussing democracy and related concepts. Though the cops may be cute and cartoony on this awareness campaign, the real-world aspects of violating those laws can result in serious penalties for the accused.

Clippy takes on Chinese internet

I imagine surfing the Chinese internet with cartoon coppers would look something like this:

It would be just about as annoying as those old Clippy pop-ups too.
