| Fake Steve Outed As Forbes' Daniel Lyons |
Lyons recently updated the FSJ blog to confirm the findings by the Times and reporter Brad Stone:
Now you've ruined the mystery of Fake Steve, robbing thousands of people around the world of their sense of childlike wonder. Hope you feel good about yourself, you mangina. One bright side is that at least I was busted by the Times and not Valleywag. I really, really enjoyed seeing those guys keep guessing wrong.Meanwhile, the Times described how the old world of print media, clued in by the forthcoming FSJ book, managed to dredge up a secret that had been the cause of much speculation for about 14 months:
The book, in part, led to Mr. Lyons’s unmasking. Last year, his agent showed the manuscript to several book publishers and told them the anonymous author was a published novelist and writer for a major business magazine. The New York Times found Mr. Lyons by looking for writers who fit those two criteria, and then by comparing the writing of “Fake Steve” to a blog Mr. Lyons writes in his own name, called Floating Point (floatingpoint.wordpress.com).Lyons had been roasted in 2005 for his anti-blogger commentary. We think quite a few of the FSJ readers who were among Lyons' critics two years ago are going to be very shocked by the revelation of his identity.
