Microsoft announced it is partnering with Games for Change to examine new ways to promote social awareness on issues through digital gaming.
Microsoft has outlined a socially minded global gaming competition, Xbox 360 Games for Change Challenge, which will focus on social issues. The global competition will launch in August in over 100 countries and will challenge college students to create the best game based on the theme of global warming.
The students will create games based on global warming using Microsoft XNA Game Studio Express software. Microsoft and Games for Change will offer cash prizes for the best entries. Winners will also be invited to visit Microsoft and present their game to the management team for possible inclusion in the Xbox Live Arcade service.
"The current generation of gamers is among the most socially conscious in history," said Suzanne Seggerman, co-founder and president of Games for Change. "We know from experience that young people are looking for ways to help make the world a better place, and who better to support this effort than an industry leader like Microsoft?"
